MESC Releases Îyinîw Metawewina Teacher Resource

Maskwacîs, Treaty 6 Territory – April 2, 2026 – Maskwacîs Education Schools Commission (MESC) has released a new Îyinîw Metawewina Teacher Resource to support the integration of traditional Indigenous games into classroom instruction.

The resource is designed to support student physical development while incorporating cultural and historical context related to the games. It aligns with educational outcomes and provides teachers with structured opportunities to include Indigenous perspectives in physical education programming.

The publication includes photography by Dianne Crane and features participation from members of the Maskwacîs Curriculum Department, including Ida Bull, Carla Badger, Danny Makinaw, Patti Johnson, Jolene Rain, Norine Buffalo, Paula Mackinaw, Warren Omeasoo, and Dianne Crane, as well as Adam Daigneault.

MESC acknowledges Dianne Crane and Lyndon Suntjens as co-authors of the resource. They also identified curriculum-linked learning outcomes associated with each game.

“This resource provides practical support for educators seeking to incorporate Indigenous games into their teaching practice,” said Sharon Currie, Associate Superintendent of Learning Services.

Carla Badger, Director of Maskwacîs Curriculum, noted that traditional games support both physical development and broader learning outcomes, including critical thinking, teamwork, and
problem-solving, while reflecting Indigenous knowledge systems.

The Îyinîw Metawewina Teacher Resource is now available for use within MESC schools.
