OTTAWA — The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, today issued a statement following Kinder Morgan’s submission of its official application for the expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline to the National Energy Board.
“The proposed expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline will undergo a thorough, science-based review by the independent National Energy Board (NEB), taking into account the safety of the public and the environment.
“The NEB review process will allow for public comments and participation, including by Aboriginal Peoples.
“Our government has been clear: we will only allow energy projects to proceed if they are found to be safe for Canadians after an independent, scientific environmental and regulatory review. That is why we are moving forward with our plans to further enhance marine and pipeline safety and to engage with First Nations on West Coast energy infrastructure.
“The NEB is a strong, independent regulator and makes decisions at arm’s-length from government. Once the NEB determines that the application is complete, it will deliver its report within 15 months. The federal government will subsequently review the NEB’s recommendations and make a final decision on the application within 90 days.”
