MKO Honours Aboriginal Justice Awareness Day

Press Release

February 27, 2026

Treaty Five Territory, Thompson MB – On Aboriginal Justice Awareness Day we continue the work to end systemic racism in all parts of the justice system. Nearly four decades since the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry was launched after the kidnapping and murder of Helen Betty Osborne and the police shooting of John Joseph Harper (JJ Harper), Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) continues to call on all levels of government to fully implement the recommendations of the AJI, the MMIWG Calls for Justice, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action; essential steps toward meaningful, systemic change.

MKO remains focused on strengthening safety, and healing systems that honour the rights, cultures, and inherent self‑determination of Northern First Nations.

As part of MKO’s Whole of Government Response, some initiatives include:

  • The establishment of a first-of-its-kind Youth Healing Lodge, a land‑based and trauma‑informed facility rooted in cultural identity, healing and holistic wellness.
  • The MKO By‑law Pilot Project is a groundbreaking initiative. For the first time in Canada, tickets are being issued under First Nation laws. This marks a major legal milestone and empowers our Nations to reclaim authority over public safety and justice.
  • Strengthening First Nation Safety Officers (FNSOs) programs by working with Nations and the Province. Increasing the number of FNSOs is vital: more officers on the ground means quicker responses and safety services that reflect local priorities and cultural values.
  • MKO’s Indigenous Court Worker Program ensures culturally informed support for citizens at home as they navigate the court system.
  • MKO’s First Nations Justice Strategy ensures Community Justice Workers are available for citizens who come into conflict with the justice system.

Central to MKO’s long‑term public safety vision is the creation of a First Nations–led police service. MKO continues to advocate to have First Nations policing recognized as an essential service and to support the development of a new self‑administered police service.

Together, these initiatives reflect MKO’s commitment to safer Nations, stronger supports for youth and families, and justice systems guided by culture, dignity, and the lived realities of Nations we serve.
