Russell, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis – Today, the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), the National Government of the Red River Métis, is proud to announce the groundbreaking Russell Métis Seniors Affordable Housing project. The project is part of its ongoing commitment to affordable, safe, and accessible housing for Red River Métis Citizens across the province.
This housing project will consist of two duplexes, for a total of four affordable seniors housing units.
The MMF Minister of Housing and Property Management, Will Goodon, made the announcement along with Councillor Joel Boucher from the Municipality of Russell-Binscarth.
“The MMF recognizes that housing for seniors is an important issue for our Red River Métis Citizens,” said Minister Goodon. “Today’s announcement works towards ensuring that all Red River Métis Senior Citizens have access to safe and affordable housing that is adapted to meet any mobility challenges they may experience.”
All units will include features to accommodate residents with mobility concerns such as space underneath the sink and stove to allow for wheelchairs, grab bars in the bathroom, a ramp to the front door, and more.
The units also feature amenities such as a sunroom, deck, an exterior storage shed, luxury vinyl flooring, and high efficiency appliances so that future tenants may live comfortably.
The project is funded under the Urban, Rural, and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy. The MMF appreciates the funding, which is a result of the strong relationship between the federal government and the Red River Métis.
The MMF strives to employ Red River Métis contractors on all our projects, and we are proud to announce that the General Contractor for this project, Keller Developments, is a Red River Métis-owned company.
This project is just one piece of the MMF’s affordable housing strategy as we work towards our goal of ensuring that all Red River Métis Citizens have access to safe, affordable housing.
More seniors housing projects are on the way, as the MMF Housing Department is conducting market research and engaging with the MMF Regions to determine where future projects are most needed.
“The MMF remains committed to building safe, affordable housing in the cities, towns and villages our Citizens call home,” said Minister Goodon. “Without the nation-to-nation, government-to-government relationship we have built with Canada, the project would not have been possible. By working together with Canada, we are able to ensure our Citizens can continue to live where they choose, surrounded by their friends and relatives, celebrating the culture they worked so hard to preserve and protect for future generations. We want our seniors to be able to live in safety and comfort – it’s the least we can do to give back to those who have given us so much.”
