Press Release

May 13, 2026

Winnipeg, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis – Today, the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), the National Government of the Red River Métis, extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Richard Flett, who quietly sought shelter within one of our properties during a time of personal hardship, and passed away.

While the personal details surrounding his circumstances are not fully clear, what is known is that Mr. Flett came to our property seeking warmth, safety, and refuge. Tragically, he later passed away.

At this time, our thoughts, prayers, and heartfelt condolences are with his family, loved ones, and all those who knew him. No person should ever feel alone or without support and this tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the struggles many vulnerable individuals continue to face every day.

Out of respect for the family and ongoing processes, we will not be speculating nor commenting publicly about his specific circumstances. However, we are committed to offering support to those who are impacted by his passing. This includes working with the Flett family on a vigil and undertaking ceremony, guided by his family and his community. We have also reached out to the Chief of Garden Hill First Nation to offer support should they want it.

We acknowledge the compassion shown by the authorities, MMF staff, first responders, and all those who responded with a desire to preserve Mr. Flett’s dignity at the end of his life.

We are reminded of the importance of humanity, kindness, and caring for all our relatives, especially those facing hardship or isolation.

We ask our community, and all communities that form the fabric of this province and this country, to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers during this time of unimaginable loss.
