More than $1.3 million in sport and recreation funding announced

Press Release

June 23, 2016

WHITEHORSE—Partnerships between the Government of Yukon, the Yukon Lottery Commission and Sport Canada have made more than $1.3 million in funding available to Yukon’s sport and recreation community.

“I am pleased to announce our continued support of Yukon’s many sport and recreation organizations, athletes, coaches and officials,” Minister of Community Services Currie Dixon said. “We are proud to contribute to a better quality of life for Yukoners through investments in sport and recreation. From pre-schoolers to pensioners, we aim to create opportunities for all Yukoners to live active, healthy lifestyles.”

This year, 26 sport organizations and five special recreation groups will receive financial support through the Yukon Recreation Advisory Committee program while the sport organizations will also receive grants through the Yukon Sport 4 Life program. The High Performance program will fund 34 individual athletes and officials and the Elite Athlete program will invest in four Yukon athletes who have been identified by national sport organizations.

The funding will help sport organizations conduct activities related to athlete development, leadership development, facility operations and maintenance and more. Additionally, the funding will help sport organizations prepare for major events like the 2017 Canada Summer Games and 2017 North American Indigenous Games.
