Mosaic’s 2025 Wildfire Prevention Strategy Prioritizes Community Safety and Forest Health

Press Release

May 22, 2025

An early start to the fire season on private forest lands underscores the need for careful planning, investment in protection, and collaboration with communities.

early May fire that began on private lands managed by Mosaic serves as a reminder that wildfire season is here.

An unattended campfire is believed to be the cause of the three-hectare wildfire that started near Campbell River. Fortunately, a collaborative effort between local fire departments, BC Wildfire Service, and Mosaic prevented the fire from spreading to nearby homes and businesses.

The early season wildfire highlights the importance of being responsive and ready. In a recent Mosaic survey, wildfire risk from human activity was a leading concern for those recreating on private managed forest land.

When it comes to wildfire, uncertainty is the only certainty,” said Steve Mjaaland, Mosaic’s Manager of Forest Protection. “As a responsible landowner and neighbour, Mosaic is committed to fortifying all lines of defence to help ensure the safety of our communities, landscapes, and resources.”

Each year, Mosaic prepares a Wildfire Preparedness Plan, which it shares with BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) and local communities. The company also invests heavily in technology and staff to monitor, prevent, and act on fires. Key actions from the Plan include:

  • Enhanced field equipment and monitoring systems (response capabilities, weather sensors, response trucks).

  • Strategic partnerships with BCWS and local agencies for co-ordinated response.

  • Advanced detection technology including satellite monitoring and innovative drone/sensor trials.

  • Proactive risk management through access limitations during high-danger periods.

  • Comprehensive staff and contractor training in fire safety and incident command.

Mosaic urges Vancouver Islanders to always be safe in neighbouring forests. Follow all fire bans and restrictions and report any wildfires (1 800 663-5555 or *5555 on a cell). Mosaic also reminds the public to check gate status for Mosaic managed lands before heading out. During wildfire season, gates may be closed to protect communities and forests.
