Press Release
January 9, 2017, Mushkegowuk Council, Moose Factory Ontario. On behalf of the office of Deputy Grand Chief Rebecca Friday, the Mushkegowuk Staff, Council of Chiefs of Mushkegowuk and my office of the Grand Chief, we extend our sincere condolences to the children, grandchildren, jabans and relations of the passing of Elder Jeemiss (James) Carpentar at the age of 92. Jeemiss peacefully passed away in Attawapiskat with his family, friends and loved ones by his side on January 8 2017.
Elder Jeemiss as we know him was a man of great knowledge. He served has a member of the Canadian Rangers for many years, providing security and protection to the sparsely settled northern, coastal and isolated areas of Canada’s north. He showed many the true meaning of a kind human being. He showed the 7 great teachings to his fellow men and/or Women. Jeemiss was well known for his rich knowledge of the land and teachings but most important of all his faith in Gitchi Manitou/Creator.
“I will miss this Elder so much. I already missed him after he had a major stroke a few years back. He could no longer carry on what he loved to do. To share his teachings and love. Jeemiss showed us an example of having an abundant life. He showed it wasn’t the materialistic objects that were important but to have a good life and be an example. To show love, respect, honour and compassion for your fellow human being no matter what race or nationality. His belief was that we were all created by the same Manitou and we ought to show respect amongst ourselves. Jeemiss knew the land like the back of his hand. Jeemiss believed very strongly in spirituality and that what makes us go through life no matter what circumstances we face. Having a prayerful life and to put Manitou first”, says Grand Chief Jonathan Solomon.
Jeemiss contributed so much to our People and communities. He was there when he was needed. He was our source of comfort in our time of need. He was our teacher when we needed advise. He was there to make us happy and laugh when we needed it. A humble man with a gentle spirit, with a big heart.
Our prayers to the family. Rest in peace our friend, warrior and Elder Jeemiss (James)
Carpentar. You fought a good fight and you have finished the race.
Meeg wetch for everything.
Sincerely,
Grand Chief Jonathan Solomon
