NAN wants education act action – The Chronicle Journal

Proposed federal legislation meant to ensure more aboriginal students graduate won’t overshadow ongoing attempts by aboriginal agencies to establish their own school boards, local leaders say.

Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Harvey Yesno said Tuesday that NAN is eager to “move forward” on an agreement in principle it had reached with the government long before the Conservatives announced a proposed First Nations Control of First Nations Education Act.

“Our understanding is that (the act) will complement, but won’t change, existing (educational) agreements,” Yesno said.
He made the comments following a speech about the proposed act by Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Minister Bernard Valcourt.
