Passenger ferry service between Nanaimo and Vancouver is a small step closer to reality after Island Ferry Service and the Nanaimo Port Authority agreed on terms that could lead to the company signing a lease for marina space.
“It’s a deal to make a deal,” said David Marshall, director of operations for Island Ferries. “It’s not the lease itself, but we have agreed on all the high-level terms that go into a lease.”
Marshall said with that in place the company can now start “kicking over some of the other dominoes” in order to be operational by the early summer of 2018.
“[This step] was critical. At the simplest level, if you don’t have a port from which to operate, you don’t have a service,” he said. “To some extent it’s held up work in other areas.”
