National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak Extends Congratulations to Incoming Governor General Louise Arbour

(June 8, 2026 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa) – National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak attended the swearing-in ceremony today for Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Louise Arbour, who now becomes the 31st Governor General of Canada.

“On behalf of the Assembly of First Nations, I extend my sincere congratulations to Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Louise Arbour,” said National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. “As the representative of the Crown, she now assumes a unique role in strengthening relations between First Nations and the Crown. The Treaties signed between the Crown and First Nations are sacred living documents, rooted in mutual respect and recognition of First Nations inherent rights and sovereignty. Her Excellency’s distinguished career shows wisdom, experience, and a clear commitment to justice that will serve Canadians well as she undertakes this office. I look forward to meeting with Her Excellency soon to discuss how we can continue building a strong relationship between First Nations and the Crown.”
