New Date Announced for the Inquest into the Death of Kevin Mamakwa

Dr. Kevin Miller, Regional Supervising Coroner, North Region, Thunder Bay Office, announced today that a new date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Kevin Mamakwa. The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2026, at 189 Red River Road, Thunder Bay. Dr. Michael Wilson will be the presiding officer and Kate Forget and Robert Kozak will be the inquest counsel.

Mr. Mamakwa, 27 years old, died on June 2, 2020, while in custody at the Thunder Bay Jail. Mr. Mamakwa was a member of Kingfisher Lake First Nation. An inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Mamakwa’s death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

The inquest is expected to last nine days and hear from approximately 15 witnesses.
