New videos launched on intimate partner violence

Press Release

28 November 2016

BATHURST (GNB) – A series of videos were officially launched today to educate the public on how to recognize intimate partner violence. They were developed in conjunction with the Love Shouldn’t Hurt campaign by the Roundtable on Crime and Public Safety.

“Your government is proud to support the Love Shouldn’t Hurt campaign and to work with our partners to help eliminate intimate partner violence,” said Justice and Public Safety Minister Denis Landry. “I encourage everyone to watch these videos and share them online so that more people can recognize the signs of abuse. We all have a role to play in keeping New Brunswickers safe in their homes and communities.”

Public screenings were held at community colleges in Bathurst and Miramichi, at a high school in Saint John and at the Université de Moncton. The videos, available in English and French, were created to help raise awareness of intimate partner violence, and to foster conversations about relationships, abuse, risk factors, the impact of intimate partner violence upon children and how bystanders can help.

“I am particularly proud that this launch coincides with 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a United Nations’ campaign,” said Landry. “I encourage communities around the province to host video screenings and have meaningful conversations on how to build a culture that does not tolerate intimate partner violence.”

The Roundtable on Crime and Public Safety brings together community agencies, the police, the private sector, academia, First Nations groups, municipal and federal governments, and several provincial departments to collaborate on improvements to crime prevention policy and practice in the province. The Love Shouldn’t Hurt campaign is a component of a more comprehensive approach to reduce intimate partner violence.
