NTI Responds to Federal Announcement on Hydroelectricity Project in Iqaluit

Press Release

(November 14, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut) Yesterday, Nunavut Tunngavik President Jeremy Tunraluk joined Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Rebecca Alty, Premier PJ Akeeagok, Qikiqtani Inuit Association President Olayuk Akesuk, and Nunavut Nukkiksautiit Corporation President Harry Flaherty at the Iqaluit Power Plant as the Government of Canada announced their support for the Iqaluit Nukkiksautiit Hydroelectric Project.

“Today’s announcement demonstrates Inuit leadership in the development of infrastructure essential to securing Canada’s Arctic,” said NTI President Jeremy Tunraluk. “Replacing diesel with dependable hydro in Iqaluit is a climate win; it’s also a cost-of-living plan, a health plan, and a growth plan. Affordable, reliable electricity is the foundation of new housing, health Centres, training facilities, and businesses. It will lower the cost of living across the territory, stabilize energy costs, and ensure energy security in our capital. This is the kind of long-life asset a credible northern Arctic demands, and a precondition for growth needed for the Northern Operational Support Hub.”

The Nunavut Agreement, a constitutionally protected treaty, recognizes that Inuit in the Arctic are essential to Canadian sovereignty. Inuit living in the North are the reason Canada can call itself an Arctic nation. Affordable, reliable electricity in the North allows for new housing, health centres, training facilities, infrastructure to support Canada’s sovereignty, and businesses, and will provide stability to strengthen the connection of Nunavut to the rest of Canada.

Inuit have a vision for Nunavut development that centers community security and wellbeing. Inuit have already developed other nation-building projects to being shovel-ready, including the Arctic Economic and Security Corridor, the Qikiqtarjuaq Deep Sea Port, and the Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link. These projects of national interest will transform Nunavut and strengthen Canada’s Arctic presence. They will deliver benefits to Nunavut Inuit and the rest of Canada.
