Nunatsiavut Energy Security Plan Released

Press Release

January 24, 2017

Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe today released the Nunatsiavut Energy Security Plan, a proactive and sustainable development approach to meeting the energy and security needs of Labrador’s five Inuit communities. The plan was tabled during a regular sitting of the Nunatsiavut Assembly in Hopedale.

“The lack of energy security in Nunatsiavut is a hindrance to economic and social growth and stability,” says President Lampe. “If we are to develop our economy and improve the lives of our people, then it is essential we find ways to address our long-term energy requirements.”

The plan – produced through extensive national and global research on sustainable energy in remote and Northern communities, and through consultations within Nunatsiavut – also touches on other municipal infrastructure dimensions, notably housing and community facilities.

“Through a comprehensive, inclusive and substantive process, this plan directly addresses community needs for Nunatsiavut in a manner that considers the social, economic and environmental dimensions of energy. Equally important, it is grounded in the regulatory and policy umbrella of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the economics of energy that are a reality for all.”

The Nunatsiavut Energy Security Plan is a “first step” towards forging a more sustainable energy future in Nunatsiavut, adds President Lampe, noting that effort has been taken to ensure that the proposed actions can produce a range of energy security benefits for Nunatsiavummiut and businesses, and are community-centered and achievable over the short and medium terms.
