Nunavut land referendum results

IQALUIT, Nunavut (May 10, 2016) – Nunavummiut cast their votes in a community-by-community referendum on May 9, 2016, to determine if municipal lands could be sold in the territory.

“The Government of Nunavut is pleased that Nunavummiut have expressed their views of their communities through this referendum,” said Minister of Community and Government Services (CGS) Joe Savikataaq. “This process will help determine how municipalities will develop and use their lands in the future.”

The Department of CGS was the plebiscite authority for this referendum and conducted a public awareness campaign to educate Nunavummiut on the implications of a “yes” or “no” vote.

“The Department of CGS provides support to municipalities for land administration, and that ongoing support will be essential as development continues in the territory,” said Minister Savikataaq. “Although the functions of land administration may change in some communities as a result of the referendum, the support that CGS provides to all Nunavut communities will continue.”

Referendum results are available on the Elections Nunavut website at http://www.elections.nu.ca. For more information, please contact your hamlet office or CGS at landreferendum@gov.nu.ca or 1-844-544-7409.
