Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald offers Condolences on the Passing of Steve Fobister Sr., A Tireless Advocate

(Toronto, October 16, 2018) – Today, Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald has expressed her sorrow over the passing of Steve Fobister Sr. A tireless advocate for Grassy Narrows, environmental justice, and First Nations peoples and rights.

“Steve Fobister Sr. and I were Chiefs at the same time and our communities supported each other. He was a kind and gentle man with the heart of a powerful warrior,” said Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald. “I offer my deepest condolences to the family, friends, allies and Grassy Narrows community. I have so how much admiration for him. I’m proud of the leadership he displayed, but most importantly, his resiliency in overcoming decades of neglect, and always carrying kindness in the face of such odds.”

A funeral service for the late Steve Fobister Sr. will take place today.  Fobister passed away in Kenora on Oct. 11, 2018, at the age of 66. Born in Dryden, Fobister had a distinguished career serving as Grand Chief of Treaty #3, Chief of Grassy Narrows First Nation for five terms, as well an accomplished environmentalist, mediator, guide, hunter, trapper and hockey coach of the “Famous Grassy Narrows Rockies”. He will be truly missed.
