Ontario Supporting Economic Development, Job Creation in Algoma

Press Release

March 29, 2019

Ontario’s Government for the people is supporting small businesses in Batchewana First Nation by investing in a manufacturing facility for fishing equipment, creating three full-time jobs.

Today, Ross Romano, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, announced Black Fox Fishing is receiving $50,000 to secure a trademark and purchase equipment for a manufacturing facility located in Batchewana First Nation.

Our government has made Ontario ‘Open for Business’ by taking urgent and necessary action to make Ontario a leading destination for investment and job creation.

“With Ontario’s support, Black Fox Fishing will be able to continue manufacturing its product locally, supporting business growth and creating jobs,” said Parliamentary Assistant Romano. “This investment in the local economy sends a strong signal that Northern Ontario is open for business.”

Black Fox Fishing makes an ice fishing rod holder that automatically sets the hook when a fish bites. The product is available at stores across Canada and in the United States.

“We’re proud to make a product that’s designed and manufactured locally,” said Brendan Syrette, owner of Black Fox Fishing. “This investment will help us grow the business, hire new staff and continue making the product here in Northern Ontario.”
