Options for Band Council Elections for Pic Mobert First Nation

Press Release

March 29, 2016

Options available for the conducting of future band council elections

Why are we doing this?

Our current election system is under the Indian Act, which is known to have flaws. The most notably flaw is the two (2) year term. The two year term is disruptive to the community. It sets up a situation where council has one (1) year to work then it is back to election mode again. There are currently three (3) election options available:

  1. The Indian Act Election System
  2. First Nations Election Act
  3. Band Custom Election Code

  2. Hired a coordinator with funding from Indigenous & Northern Affairs Canada (INAC)
  3. Committee has been educated on options
  4. Coordinator summarized work
