This past spring, the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Region 3 hosted two dynamic events celebrating Métis entrepreneurship and encouraging business innovation across the community.
On April 29, the Business Pitch Competition gave Métis-owned businesses a chance to showcase their ventures — whether seeking start-up funding, expansion support, or new growth opportunities. Ten businesses submitted two-minute video pitches, and five finalists were chosen to present live before a public audience and a panel of esteemed judges: Jennifer St. Germain, MNO Chief Strategy Officer; Ian Lane, Executive Director of Northern Ontario Angels; and Jason Cloutier, Business Advisor at The Venture Centre. A youth participant also joined the stage to share their business idea.
The competition was proudly sponsored by the Abitibi Inland Métis Community, Canada Nickel, The Venture Centre, The Infinity Group, and J&B Cycle and Marine.
Congratulations to Grand Prize Winner Déco Véro, who took home $10,000! Runners-up receiving $1,000 each included Ferme Picotte Farm, CNC Cabinets, Baskets by Jenn, and And U Clean Car Wash. The Youth Prize went to 11-year-old Zak Brunet of Printy McPrintface, who received $3,000 to grow his innovative 3D printing business.
Since winning, Déco Véro’s founder Veronique Filion has made headlines. Her handmade wood ornament business has soared, with over 15,000 orders worldwide. Her journey — shaped by her Métis heritage — has been featured across web and radio.
On April 30, the 2nd Annual Business Summit followed, offering a full day of learning and networking. Attendees heard from guest speakers on digital marketing trends, entrepreneurship, human resources, and financing. Jennifer St. Germain also presented “Who Are the Métis People,” providing important cultural context. The day wrapped up with door prizes and special take-home items.
Thank you to everyone who attended, supported, and helped make these events a success. The MNO is proud to support Métis citizens with big ideas and bold visions for the future — and we’re already looking forward to next year!
