Press Release

May 10, 2016

Iqaluit, NU

Premier Peter Taptuna today released the following statement:

“I’m very pleased the Canadian government has decided to fully support the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

This is an important step and I’m hopeful this will strengthen Canada’s relationship with all Indigenous people, including the Inuit of Nunavut. I look forward to working with the federal government in this important development to better our nation.

The Government of Nunavut looks forward to working with Canada, as well as Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami to implement the declaration in an appropriate manner. One that respects Inuit rights under the Canadian Constitution and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.”
