Premier’s statement on National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism

Press Release

June 23, 2026

VICTORIA – Premier David Eby has issued the following statement on National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism:

“Today, we honour those whose lives were taken or forever changed by acts of terrorism.

“Forty-one years ago, 329 passengers and crew aboard Air India Flight 182 lost their lives in the deadliest terrorist attack in Canadian history. Among them were 280 Canadians, many with deep ties to communities throughout British Columbia. Two baggage handlers were also killed in a related bombing at Narita Airport in Japan.

“The effects of terrorism are felt across generations. Families, friends and entire communities continue to carry the weight of profound loss and grief decades later. On this day of remembrance, we reflect on the lives lost and stand with all those affected by extremist violence.

“We must continue to push back against hatred, intolerance and division. By working together to uphold compassion, inclusion and respect for one another, we strengthen the connections that help keep our communities safe and strong.

“I offer my sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of those who were killed in acts of terrorism, and my thoughts remain with those who were injured. We will continue to remember those who were lost, and all those whose lives were changed forever.”
