November 6, 2025

Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe today extended sincere condolences to the family, friends, and community of Nain following the passing last evening of Inuit Elder Rita Andersen.

Ms. Andersen began her career with the former Labrador Inuit Association in November 1976, serving in various roles including Executive Secretary to the President and Interpreter/Translator. She retired in 2016 as Interpreter/Translator Coordinator for the Nunatsiavut Government, concluding a remarkable four-decade career in public service.

Throughout her life, Ms. Andersen was a tireless advocate for the promotion, revitalization, and protection of Labrador Inuttitut. Her work ensured that the voices and stories of Labrador Inuit were heard, understood, and respected. She received numerous accolades for her contributions, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Newfoundland and Labrador Seniors of Distinction Award, and the King Charles III Coronation Medal.

“She was a true champion of our language and a beloved Elder whose legacy will continue to inspire generations,” said President Lampe. “Her contributions to language and culture were immeasurable, and her passing represents a huge loss for all Labrador Inuit.”
