More than 50 people gathered outside the Ministry of Children and Family Development offices in Kelowna Friday afternoon to protest the government’s treatment of aboriginal children.

The protest fell on Universal Children’s Day, a day proclaimed by the United Nations to promote the welfare of the world’s children.

Grand Chief Stewart Phillip attended the protest. He said the government’s mishandling of children is responsible for multiple deaths of young people in care.

“Aboriginal people in care have died tragically as a consequence of the policies or lack of policies on the part of the Ministry of Children and Family Development,” Phillip said.
