QIA Seeking Board Member for the Aajuraq Conservation Fund Society

Iqaluit, Nunavut, April 30, 2025 – The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) is seeking one individual interested in submitting their application to the Aajuraq Conservation Fund Society Board of Directors.

The newly formed Society will be a charitable foundation that financially supports Inuit-led sustainable conservation within the Qikiqtani region, and where applicable, other ocean areas of Canada for the benefit of Inuit and other Canadians.

Board members appointed to the Society will make decisions on disbursement of funding for Inuit-led governance, stewardship and infrastructure development on a regional scale in support of the SINAA agreement and associated conservation outcomes across the Qikiqtani region, as well as making investment decisions on funds held by the Society.

Board members must meet the following criteria to be eligible for appointment:

1. Be an Inuk registered in the Qikiqtani region, as defined by the Nunavut Agreement
2. meet the qualifications to serve as a Director of a Canadian not-for-profit Nunavut society;
3. demonstrate or be willing to acquire cultural competency and knowledge of the rights, histories and contemporary perspectives of Inuit of the Qikiqtani region;
4. have or be willing to acquire the necessary skills and abilities to read and understand financial and investment statements; and
5. serve as an individual, not as representatives of other organizations or institutions.

In addition to the eligibility requirements, members should relate to one or more of the following areas of expertise:

1. knowledge of Inuit culture and Maligait;
2. general expertise in Nunavut or Inuit Nunangat;
3. jurisdictional expertise in project planning and execution in Nunavut;
4. conservation expertise, including Inuit-led conservation and stewardship;
5. Financial management;
6. investment management;
7. expertise in the project finance for permanence approach to durable conservation;
8. conservation trust fund management experience; and or
9. governance/legal expertise.
