Press Release

From: Department of Finance Canada

September 9, 2025 – Edmonton, Alberta – Department of Finance Canada

Today, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue, accompanied by the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, the Honourable Julie Dabrusin, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and Ryan Turnbull, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and National Revenue and Secretary of State (Canada Revenue Agency and Financial Institutions), brought together leaders from Canada’s energy sector in Edmonton to discuss the industry’s role in advancing major nation-building projects and supporting Canada’s economic growth ahead of Budget 2025.

The discussion focused on the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly shifting global energy landscape, including efforts to diversify trade and secure strategic markets, expand internal trade through energy corridors, attract investments, and support a cleaner, job-creating economy.

Minister Champagne emphasized the government’s decisive action to accelerate major nation-building projects – including ports, railways, energy corridors, critical mineral developments, and clean energy initiatives – under the recently passed Building Canada Act. He underlined the role of the new Major Projects Office, headquartered in Calgary, in helping projects get built faster, while upholding rigorous environmental standards and the rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The participants also discussed the government’s plan to strengthen competition and productivity, and the importance of investment tax credits to accelerate the adoption of clean technologies, renewable energy, and low-carbon industries.

Insights from the discussion will help shape Budget 2025, which will focus on expediting nation-building projects, bringing down costs for Canadians, creating jobs, building more homes, and strengthening Canada’s defence and energy sectors.
