Second shelter set up in Winnipeg as wildfire evacuees worry about home – APTN

Approximately a dozen city of Winnipeg workers spent Friday morning setting up cots and laying down flooring at a Winnipeg soccer complex in preparation for nearly 700 evacuees from Manitoba’s Island Lake region.

The Canadian Red Cross announced Thursday evening a second emergency evacuation centre was being set up to accommodate thousands of evacuees from Wasagamack, St. Theresa Point and Garden Hill First Nations.

The first evacuation centre in downtown Winnipeg reached capacity late Thursday evening.

“We needed more space. We’ve essentially filled up the Convention Centre shelter, so we’re now putting in cots here at the Winnipeg North Soccer Complex,” said Jason Small, communications manager for the Canadian Red Cross.
