Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority Spotlight: Rising to the Challenge With the Community Health Worker Diabetes Program
In this research, we look at the Sioux First Nations Community Health Worker Diabetes Program and the pressures community health workers (CHWs) face in addressing the ongoing diabetes crisis in rural and remote Indigenous communities.
Strengthening CHWs’ roles requires considering the full context in which they work within a wider health system, where funding constraints and staff shortages mean they often serve multiple health needs in remote settings with limited support. How does better integrating CHWs within rotating healthcare teams facilitate role recognition and distribution of responsibilities? How can communities of practice be fostered to reduce isolation and enhance knowledge sharing?
