Christa Jonathan, a Sociology student at McMaster University and a member of Six Nations, crossed the stage at her convocation in a traditional ribbon dress, customarily worn for ceremonial occasions.
Christa, an award-winning scholar, did not wear an academic gown, though she was “hooded,” in keeping with the university’s convocation protocol.
The 21-year-old was the first person to graduate wearing traditional Indigenous dress, and she hopes others will follow her example.
