Spring Flood Bulletin #4

Press Release

April 23, 2026

Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre advises that with warmer temperatures and continued snowmelt, the Icelandic River and Fisher River in the Interlake region are under a flood warning. Levels have exceeded bankfull capacities at some locations. The Assiniboine River also continues to be under a flood warning as snowmelt water passes through the system.

Provincial staff continue to support preparations for potential flooding in multiple communities through the Interlake and Parkland regions, including Peguis First Nation and Fisher River Cree Nation.

The Hydrologic Forecast Centre advises that a significant precipitation system is expected to continue across northern Manitoba, including areas such as The Pas, Flin Flon and Thompson. These areas could receive up to 40 cm of additional snow by the time the system clears out on Sunday. The precipitation system is forecasted to bring a northeast wind gusting up to 60 km/h, which may impact highway conditions. The impacts of this precipitation system on flows and water levels will be analyzed once temperatures start to warm mid-next week.

The Hydrologic Forecast Centre advises outflows from the Shellmouth reservoir will increase today from the current 2000 cubic feet per second (cfs) to near 4500 cfs as part of the normal spring operation. The Assiniboine River will continue to be in a flood warning.

As spring melt progresses, conditions can change rapidly, particularly if warm temperatures or rainfall occur over a short period. Overland flooding may develop in low-lying areas, especially where drainage systems remain partially frozen or obstructed.

The Hydrologic Forecast Centre will continue to monitor conditions and update forecasts as weather and runoff conditions evolve. Manitobans are encouraged to stay informed, particularly those living near rivers, streams and low-lying areas.

Updated flood information is available at www.manitoba.ca/flooding/ and updated road conditions at https://www.manitoba511.ca/ that notes road closures due to flooding.
