Standing Hearing Set for Inquest into Death of Tyson Dumas

A standing hearing will take place to determine who may participate in the upcoming inquest into the death of Tyson Dumas, 34, of The Pas.

The circumstances of the death are as follows:

On May 25, 2022, Dumas an inmate at The Pas Correctional Centre, was found unconscious with a severe brain injury after being involved in two altercations with other inmates. He was transported to Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg, where he was pronounced dead on June 4, 2022.

Under the Fatality Inquiries Act, an inquest has been called by the chief medical examiner. Inquests explore the circumstances and events leading to deaths to determine what, if anything, might be done to prevent similar deaths in the future.

Before the inquest begins, the judge will decide who may participate in the process and question witnesses. Individuals and groups may apply for standing to participate in the inquest. The standing hearing will be held July 17 at 9 a.m. via Microsoft Teams.
