Statement from Premier Pillai on commemorating Veterans this November

Press Release

November 8, 2024

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“This November, the Government of Yukon is honoured to join Canadians in commemorating Veterans’ Week, National Indigenous Veterans’ Day and Remembrance Day.

“From November 5 to 11, we pay tribute to Veterans’ Week, a time to honour the commitment and sacrifice of our Veterans and all those who continue to serve. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Since 1924, RCAF has served Canadians by safeguarding our peace and upholding our values. As we commemorate a century of aviation excellence, let us reflect on their achievements and recognize their courage and dedication.

“On November 8, National Indigenous Veterans’ Day, Canadians from coast to coast to coast recognize the critical contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Veterans. For more than 200 years, Indigenous Peoples have served with distinction, while overcoming significant barriers. For far too long, Canada’s colonial legacy and racism meant that Indigenous service members and Veterans were often overlooked and underappreciated. We are indebted to Indigenous Veterans including many from the Yukon. We honour their sacrifices and express our lasting respect for their service.

“On Remembrance Day, November 11, Yukoners will come together to honour the brave Canadians in uniform who uphold our values of peace, freedom and democracy. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, I ask Yukoners to join in observing two minutes of silence. Let us never forget those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the friends and family members they left behind.

“As the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poppy Campaign is underway, I encourage Yukoners to donate and wear a poppy as a sign of support for our Veterans. The Legion’s Poppy Flag will fly at the Jim Smith Building in Whitehorse from October 25 to November 11 as a tribute to the members of the Canadian Armed Forces and the RCMP.

“As we observe Veterans’ Week, National Indigenous Veterans’ Day and Remembrance Day, our government extends its deepest thanks to Veterans and recognizes the immense sacrifices made by military families – spouses, children, parents and loved ones – who endure great hardship to support those serving.

“Whether they made the ultimate sacrifice or returned home bearing visible and invisible scars, we will remember them.

“Lest we forget.”
