Indigenous concerns led to city hall abandoning first choice for community near swales
The sun appears to have set on Saskatoon city hall’s first choice for the name of a new east-side neighbourhood after concerns were raised during Indigenous consultation.
City hall administration, on the recommendation of staff who work for the city’s development branch, Saskatoon Land, had settled on the name Hawthorn for the newest neighbourhood on the city’s northeast periphery.
Instead, the name Sunrise is being proposed for approval by city council’s civic naming committee at a meeting Friday afternoon.
