Ontario Strengthening Northern Economy

Ontario is helping to build a stronger, more diverse northern economy by supporting the development of strategic plans for communities across the Kenora – Rainy River region.

With financial support from the province’s Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), five projects in the area are boosting the regional economy and laying the groundwork for future development:

  • Eabametoong First Nation is receiving $44,325 to conduct a community-wide holistic planning exercise and develop a community strategic plan that will research the potential direct benefits of the nearby mining developments. It will also assess existing local resources and determine current and future opportunities for the community.
  • Neskantaga Economic Development Corporation is receiving $44,325 to complete a comprehensive community economic development plan to maximize benefits and minimize potential negative effects from the Ring of Fire mining development.
  • The Whitefeather Forest Community Resource Management Authority is receiving $50,000 to help them identify and market forest products from the timber associated with the Whitefeather Forest Initiative.
  • North Caribou Lake First Nation is receiving $24,900 for a feasibility study and preliminary design of a small business centre for the community.
  • The Dryden District Chamber of Commerce is receiving $37,487 to implement a regional business retention and expansion project.

Building economic opportunities is part of the government’s plan to invest in people, build modern infrastructure and support a dynamic and innovative business climate.
