Press Release
Nov 21, 2016
The Government of Alberta is supporting restorative justice programs with $360,000 in grants to eligible non-profit organizations, First Nations and community groups.
The program will provide up to $50,000 annually to organizations that practise, promote or develop restorative justice initiatives throughout Alberta. The programs are an alternative or supplement to any sentence and can be initiated at any time during the criminal justice process, with the consent of both the victim and the offender.
“Restorative justice initiatives ensure that victims and communities have a voice. They also allow offenders to gain an understanding of the harm their actions have caused. Supporting the innovative work done by groups that offer restorative justice programs helps to make our communities safer and more resilient.”
Kathleen Ganley, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General
“By supporting these programs through the grant, the government encourages communities to strive to find ways to resolve the consequences of crime and make their communities safe.”
Jan Moran, Treasurer, Alberta Restorative Justice Association
Grants are available for organizations seeking to start a restorative justice initiative as well as for groups with existing programs.
“Funding we have received for restorative justice helps victims of crime, restores communities and helps offenders at the same time by holding them accountable for their actions. We are pleased to have received funding from the Alberta government for restorative justice initiatives that truly create safer communities over the long term.”
Chris Hay, Executive Director, John Howard Society of Alberta
Deadline for submissions is noon on Jan. 6, 2017.
