WHITEHORSE—The Yukon government and the Carcross/Tagish First Nation are proceeding with an extension of the Tagish Road, as identified in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on economic development signed last December.
“Both parties have recently agreed to share the $800,000 cost of expanding the Tagish Road in Carcross. This supports the First Nation’s Bennett Beach project and provides access to Yukon land for potential residential development for the people of Carcross,” Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Scott Kent said.
The Yukon government has agreed to contribute fifty per cent of the cost of the road extension, up to a maximum of $400,000.
“We are pleased with the progress of C-31 Bennett Beach development,” Carcross/Tagish First Nation Chief Danny Cresswell said. “The Tagish Road extension will enhance the infrastructure in Carcross and ensure room for expansion that will benefit Carcross residents for generations to come.”
The First Nation’s Bennett Beach residential-commercial project was identified as a project of interest in the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding as well as in the recently approved Carcross local area plan. The project also received a favorable recommendation from the Yukon Environmental Assessment Board (YESAB).
