(NORTH BAY, ONT.) – Canadore College has recently developed admissions policies to open up greater access to college education.
Typically, hopeful students must complete an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent or successfully complete the General Education Development Test (GED) at a minimum before being granted admissions into a full-time postsecondary college program. Canadore recently developed some direct-entry preparatory programs waiving this requirement.
“Our General Arts and Science, Indigenous Preparatory Studies, Trades Fundamentals and Aboriginal Women in the Trades programs are now open to a wider audience,” said Jeannette Miron, Registrar and Manager of Institutional Research at Canadore College. “These programs help students to acquire the academic skills and readiness experience to prepare them to successfully complete more postsecondary attainment.”
Access to higher education has been an issue of long-standing interest in Canada. Research shows that a persistent gap is observed in postsecondary participation rates among individuals from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Higher education attainment rates are expected to bring more equal standards of living as well as increased competitiveness and productivity resulting in expanded economic development.
“We’re looking at every avenue to make it easier for people to attend college,” said Miron. “Canadore is also working with the District of Nipissing Social Services Agency on a pilot project to lessen the effects of poverty in northern Ontario by supporting clients on Ontario Works to obtain a college credential to meet the needs of regional employers and fill employment gaps.”
Canadore trains people through applied learning, leadership and innovation. It provides access to over 65 full-time quality programs and has outstanding faculty and student services. The College and its students add nearly $290 million to the regions of Nipissing and Parry Sound. Approximately 1,000 students graduate from Canadore each year, and they join 42,000 alumni working across the globe.
