For Immediate Release
OTTAWA, November 7, 2013 – The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) and Stratos Inc. are pleased to announce their joint selection for an Excellence in Corporate Responsibility Award in the Resource Sector category for their ongoing work on the implementation of the Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) initiative.
The award was accepted by Stratos Founding Chair, George Greene on November 6th, 2013 on behalf of Stratos and MAC. The Excellence in Corporate Responsibility (ECR) Awards honour and celebrate corporate Canadian organizations for outstanding work and dedication towards creating sustainable and ethical practices in business. They are a collaboration of Green Living Enterprises, Canadian Business for Social Responsibility, CIRAIG (Interuniversity Research Centre for the Life Cycle of Products, Processes and Services), The Natural Step Canada, Jantzi-Sustainalytics, Corporate Knights, Pembina Institute, SustainAbility and Bob Willard.
Launched in 2004 by the Mining Association of Canada, the TSM initiative provides a set of guiding principles and performance elements that govern key activities of companies in all segments of the mining and mineral-processing industry. It is backed by a system of public reporting, external assurance and a national community of interest advisory panel. This panel is key to ensuring that the mining industry’s communities of interest, including mining communities, Aboriginal groups, organized labour and environmental NGOs remain engaged with charting TSM’s path forward. Stratos has supported MAC and its member companies in the development and ongoing implementation of TSM.
“It is an honour to be recognized by a jury of sustainability experts for our work helping the industry integrate sustainability practices into their operations,” said Michael van Aanhout, Chairman of Stratos. “MAC and its members have shown tremendous leadership in advancing the sustainability practices of Canadian mining and we are proud to have played a role in its development and implementation.”
“For MAC and its members to be acknowledged and recognized by such reputable experts in the sustainability field is a tremendous honour,” commented Pierre Gratton, President & CEO of the Mining Association of Canada. “The engagement of MAC members and the expertise and client focus of Stratos helped us create and continue to improve on what we believe is an emerging gold standard in the mining sector.”
