On March 2, 2016, Dr. John Long, a long time friend of the Moose Cree First Nation, passed away in North Bay, ON.
“On behalf of the Moose Cree First Nation, I offer my sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Dr. John Long. John was a friend to the Moose Cree First Nation and to the people of the Mushkegowuk region. He was deeply respected and has been a part of our community since the first time he arrived in Moose Factory to teach many years ago,” stated Chief Norm Hardisty Jr.
Dr. John Long lived and taught in Moose Factory for many years. He became a member of the community and built many close friendships that have remained to the present day. John cared about the people of Moose Factory and was dedicated to strengthening First Nation Treaty and Aboriginal rights through his academic research and writing. His book
Treaty 9: Making the Agreement to Share the Land in the Far Northern Ontario in 1905 was a landmark publication that has been described as “a masterful historical work”.
“Dr. John Long has left his mark on Moose Factory and the
Moose Cree First Nation. We will always remember and be thankful for his friendship and support. We mourn his passing and celebrate his life and the contributions that he has made to our First Nation and the Mushkegowuk region,” said Chief Hardisty.
