The Seals and Sealing Network Receives $60,000 to Assist Advocacy

Fisheries and Aquaculture February 25, 2014

Investments in the Sealing Industry Support Economic Development

A contribution of $60,000 has been made by the Provincial Government to support an awareness campaign by the Seals and Sealing Network aimed at addressing misconceptions and misinformation about the seal industry.

“The Federal Government is currently appealing the World Trade Organization’s surprising decision to uphold a ban on seal products in European Union markets based on moral concern, and so it is vital that everyone with a stake in the seal industry show their support at this time. The Provincial Government greatly respects the cultural and economic significance of sealing to communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, and is pleased to invest $60,000 to foster support for the industry.” – The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture

The campaign is intended to ensure Canadians and international stakeholders are aware of key facts regarding the Canadian sealing industry. The campaign will also help coordinate communications with federal, provincial and territorial governments leading up to the result of Canada’s appeal to the World Trade Organization’s decision.

“The decision to uphold a ban on seal products for European Markets on the basis of public morals not only has extraordinary implications for free trade, but also needlessly tarnishes the reputation of professional sealers throughout this country. Canadian sealers are held to the highest standards of conduct while carrying out a sustainable and carefully monitored hunt. The Seals and Sealing Network appreciates the support of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and we look forward to building support for a culturally-significant industry that creates much needed economic activity for rural communities.” – Glen Doucet, Executive Director, Seals & Sealing Network

Through sound fiscal management and responsible decisions, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is strengthening the business environment, encouraging the development of innovative industries, and building a vibrant economy.
