Late Tuesday night, Nunavut MP Lori Idlout crossed the floor from the NDP to the Liberal caucus, becoming the fourth MP to join Mark Carney’s government from the opposition benches since last fall. With that move, the Liberals now hold 170 seats. Three by-elections on April 13 stand between Carney and a working majority. The math is tightening in one direction only.

Idlout is not a minor figure. She has represented Nunavut since 2021. She is Inuit. She has been a persistent voice on Arctic sovereignty, housing, and Indigenous rights in the North. Her crossing is not a symbolic gesture. It is a signal that the political ground in Canada is shifting toward a government that, whatever its imperfections, is seen as the credible centre of gravity in an era that demands one.
