In 2016, Ontario passed legislation recognizing the first full week of November as Treaties Recognition Week. This annual event honours the importance of treaties and helps students and residents of Ontario learn more about treaty rights and relationships.
Since 2020, Robinson Huron Waawiindamaagewin (RHW) has used this opportunity to educate students and community members, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, about the Robinson Huron Treaty of 1850 and the work being done in the territory to establish a treaty-level governance body to address treaty-specific issues as well as efforts to return to traditional governance systems.
The Robinson Huron Treaty of 1850 establishes the foundational relationships between the Anishinaabe of the northern shores of Lake Huron, our lands, and the Crown. Treaty relationships require the participation of all those living within the Treaty territory for implementation.
We welcome you to join us this week to learn about the Robinson Huron Treaty of 1850 and reflect on your Treaty relationships, responsibilities, and obligations. We also welcome you to learn more about RHW and the work we are doing to reignite the Regional Anishinaabe Ishkodaykaan (Council Fire) in the Treaty territory.
ABOUT
WAAWIINDAMAAGEWIN
RHW is an initiative undertaken by the 21 First Nations of the Robinson Huron Treaty to create a treaty-level body capable of addressing many issues that have, until this time, been addressed within Canadian government-created agencies and systems of governance. The goal is to develop a collective Anishinaabe decision-making body progressing the interests and inherent rights of our people.
We recognize that the Treaty helps protect our inherent rights and can build on the strength of this collective to enhance and foster health and wellness for our people.
RHW also conducts treaty-based research, facilitates community engagement in Robinson Huron Treaty communities on treaty-related matters, and develops treaty education tools, including detailed use and occupancy research of the treaty area.
