Press Release
The United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin (UCCM) Police Service Commission and the UCCM Police Service are pleased to announce that, following a national selection process, Dan Despatie has been appointed as the first-ever Deputy Chief of Police for the UCCM Police Service, effective October 14, 2025.
The creation of the Deputy Chief rank marks a historic milestone for UCCM Police Service, reflecting the organization’s continued growth and the increasing scope of policing needs across its Anishnaabe communities.
Deputy Chief Despatie joins UCCM from the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS), where he served with distinction since beginning his policing career in 1998. He was promoted to the rank of Inspector in 2015 and most recently served as the Divisional Commander of the Community Safety and Well-Being Division.
A graduate of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) Global Studies Program and Laurentian University, Deputy Chief Despatie holds a degree in Geography and Education. Over the course of his career, he has served in numerous divisions and specialized units, including Patrol, Community Response, Street Crime, Criminal Investigations, Emergency Operations, Integrated Operations, and Specialized Operations, as well as the Service’s Public Order Unit and Search and Rescue Team.
Among his many professional achievements, Deputy Chief Despatie completed a year-long secondment in 2006 with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), contributing to a major drug and outlaw motorcycle gang enforcement project.
His dedication to community extends beyond policing—he has volunteered for many years as a hockey coach and youth mentor, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to leadership, mentorship, and community service. Deputy Chief Despatie is married and the proud father of three young men. Outside of policing, he enjoys hunting, hiking, and spending time with family at his recreational property on Lake Mindemoya.
The UCCM Police Service welcomes Deputy Chief Dan Despatie and looks forward to his continued commitment to community, public safety, and professional excellence. Please join the UCCM Police Service Commission and the members of the UCCM Police Service in congratulating Deputy Chief Dan Despatie on this historic appointment.
