Update on Kugaaruk Landfill Fire Response

The Department of Community Services’ Nunavut Emergency Management (NEM) division coordinated the deployment of three firefighters from the City of Iqaluit and a Government of Nunavut (GN) Deputy Fire Marshal to assist with the landfill fire response in Kugaaruk. After several days of on-the-ground support, the team has now returned to Iqaluit.

Their departure does not mark the end of GN assistance. NEM continues to work closely with the Hamlet and public health officials to monitor the situation and provide support. Local responders remain equipped with tools, safety protocols, and resources to continue suppression efforts.

NEM extends its sincere gratitude to Kugaaruk’s first responders and municipal staff for their ongoing efforts and also wishes to thank the City of Iqaluit for its generous assistance in providing essential firefighting personnel during this critical response period.
