‘It’s removing barriers, letting them get out on the land’
UPEI engineering students have created a sap boiler, a boot and glove drying rack and a salt water tank that will all soon be used at John J. Sark Memorial School with the aim of making learning from the land more accessible.
The elementary school on the Lennox Island First Nation puts an emphasis on incorporating culture into students’ education, including a heavy focus on land-based learning.
Learning from the land can include activities like hunting, tapping and identifying maple trees or learning about traditional medicines.
