Utilizing The Winter Roads Part 1 – ASWCO

This past winter two of our regional coordinators

Jocelyn Cheechoo and Richard Jourdain travelled to remote northern communities in Ontario via winter roads over frozen lakes, creeks, rivers and muskeg. The following is the first of a two-part web feature documenting their travels and experiences visiting remote First Nation communities. Enjoy as Jocelyn shares with us her visit to the communities of Kashechewan and Fort Albany First Nation.

ASWCO: Many of us aren’t familiar with the winter roads in the northern parts of the province, or what they mean to the communities that utilize them. If I’m coming from Toronto and planning on using the winter roads to get to one of the James Bay communities, explain what that entails.
