VGFN: Official Statement on Passing of Darius Elias

Today we acknowledge the passing of a strong presence in our community and government. Today we pay homage to Darius Elias and the decades of work and complete dedication to his community and people. His laughter and intelligence would fill any space he was in, as he had for years in our community hall of Old Crow or the legislature building in Whitehorse. With a sharp wit, he could easily make anyone laugh as well as quote our agreement without hesitation; all in an effort to keep our people happy and moving forward.

Darius had the heart of a giant, it had to be so, to fit all our lands and people in it. We are lucky to have had such a strong advocate that saw our future so clearly, but always brought it back and supported our youth and left no one behind.

Today our Nation pays homage to Darius Elias, our hearts have been brightened by your works, humour and presence. We hold you up in our gratitude for all of your works in our people’s name. We hold up your family who needs our love and support.

Mahsi’ Cho sh’ijah, you are now embraced by our ancestors as your new journey begins, as it had with your life and all of its works.
