Low Split Lake water levels have halted essential ferry service to northern community, lawsuit says
A northern First Nation is asking a judge for an injunction ordering Manitoba Hydro to raise water levels on Split Lake so ferry service to the isolated community can resume.
A statement of claim filed by York Factory First Nation Chief Darryl Wastesicoot on behalf of the community accuses Manitoba Hydro of “intentionally, wilfully and callously” managing water levels on Split Lake in a way that harms the community for the Crown corporation’s own economic purposes.
The suit, filed in Court of King’s Bench on Aug. 28, claims the low water levels on the lake, which surrounds York Factory reserve lands, have left the community isolated and “in manifest and imminent danger.”
