Yukon welcomes new RCMP commanding officer

Chief Superintendent Scott Sheppard has been named commanding officer of Yukon’s RCMP (“M” Division) and has assumed the leadership of Yukon’s police force.

Chief Superintendent Sheppard comes to Yukon having spent 27 years with the RCMP, over which he has gained wide-ranging experience in programs such as frontline community policing in First Nations communities, covert and undercover operations, critical incidents, relocation services and officer development and resourcing programs.

Throughout his career, Chief Superintendent Sheppard has worked in a variety of locations, including busy municipal detachments in British Columbia’s lower mainland as well as rural and First Nations communities in British Columbia and Manitoba.

Quick facts

• Chief Superintendent Sheppard has received several honours for his efforts, including the Queen’s Jubilee medal, which recognized his leadership and development of the Whole of Government approach to security during the 2010 Olympic Games, and the Commanding Officer’s Commendation for long-term undercover operations.
• Chief Superintendent Sheppard has presented on the RCMP’s Olympic security program to officials from the United Nations, Geneva and INTERPOL. He has conducted program reviews for Australian police agencies and assisted the Canadian Forces in counterinsurgency investigations during his time in Afghanistan.
• Each year, Yukon’s Minister of Justice communicates the territory’s policing priorities to Yukon RCMP’s Commanding Officer. The priorities are identified through data and information from Yukon’s Department of Justice and through recommendations from the Yukon Police Council, which engages with Yukon citizens and communities throughout the year.
