Procedure for harvesting caribou on Baffin Island

Press Releases

Start Date: August 26, 2015

End Date: September 9, 2015

Baffin Island 30 sec

The Government of Nunavut has accepted the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board’s decision to set a total allowable harvest (TAH) of 250 male caribou for Baffin Island.

However, harvesting cannot take place until the tags have been allocated to communities by the Qikiqtaaluk Wildlife Board.

Once this allocation has been made, tags will be distributed to the hunters and trappers organization (HTO) or wildlife office in each community.

People must have a tag before they start to hunt.

It is up to each HTO to decide how the tags are distributed to the hunters in their community.
